Chris Best

Software Department Manager

I look after and program Tyrell 2.5, Tyrell 2 and previously Tyrell 1. Over the past five and a half years at NAL, I have also done work on the IDU systems, Service Provider and various bespoke projects for LUL, Network Rail, to name a few.
After leaving university, I started work in Ashford programming at a CAD package company. The package was used to design Kitchens and Bathrooms.
Outside of work I don't really have a lot of spare time. I have spent one and a half years doing up a house so far! I am learning a lot of new skills like plumbing, brick laying, plastering, electrical work, carpentry, etc. Bit of a change from programming!

Notes on Nexus Alpha and The Greek Pantheon

nexus

    1. A means of connection; a link or tie
    2. The core or centre

alpha

    1. The first one; the beginning

For the curious – some notes on the Greek Pantheon – and why we have used it for our product set.
Nexus Alpha’s first computer was called Zeus.  We have retained the theme to illustrate the integrated nature of the systems Nexus Alpha is providing.

HERMES: The messenger – appropriate for the unit which is crucial to data flow and display.
PROMETHEUS: As the god who gave fire to man/womankind and hence enabled social development, the name is apposite for the software which enables the potential within HERMES to be released.
HELIOS: The sun god, appropriate therefore for high bright displays
MAIA: The goddess, mother of HERMES: the HERMES project grew from the initial work on low power audio only systems.
PHEME: (pronounced ‘faymay’) is the goddess of rumour.  PHEME’s task is to listen to all the data and trigger messages.  The difference, of course, is that our PHEME will be disseminating fact rather than rumour!
ARGONET: The Argo, of course, was Jason’s ship.  We’ve taken a small liberty with the name to reflect the application.
